Bio Bijoy Jain, Architect, Mumbai
Bio Bijoy Jain, Architect, Mumbai
Bijoy Jain, the Indian architect from Mumbai, is known for his contemporary home designs. Read about his contribution to world architecture.

Gravity, equilibrium, lightness, and transparency are some words that describe his architectural designs. He believes that his designs must also be 'porous' so that light, air, and water can go through. His self-expression is not limited to one style. Rather, he likes the idea of an unlimited scope full of possibilities. Perhaps these are some reasons why the Indian architect works have received several international accolades.

Bijoy Jain studied architecture at Washington University, USA. After working in Los Angeles and London for six years, he returned to India in 1995 to start his own practice - Studio Mumbai. The office, which was earlier exclusive to Alibaug, has now marked its presence in Mumbai also. Jain's team at Studio Mumbai also includes a carpenter and stonemason so that together, the team can work on construction and interior designs of buildings.

Born and brought up in Mumbai's Juhu area, Jain believes that the experience of growing up in the suburbs may have influenced his home design ideas to some extent. From what is observed, his body of work represents a balanced combination of tradition and modernity. With the help of local resources and craftsmen, Jain is known to create contemporary architectural designs. He does not maintain any catalogues. Rather, his team develops projects through a careful understanding of the place. The designs are drawn from traditional skills and local buildings. In an interview with ArchDaily, he said,

"I am interested in the anonymity of architecture and in finding new ways. I want to keep searching for what is important for me here and today."

Most of Studio Mumbai's projects are houses located around India. Copper House, Utsav House and Palmyra House (shown below) are some prime houses designed by him.

Jain's international presence is also extensively felt through various art installations over the years. One of his most famous contributions is the installation, "InBetween Architecture", that was later featured at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. Through such a design, Jain sought to represent the 'parasitic' architecture that emerges between existing buildings in urban cities like Mumbai. This structure, then, is based on a dwelling consisting of narrow urban allotments. Many say that "InBetween Architecture" is a cast of the space in Mumbai- representing the clutter while simultaneously offering intelligent design solutions.

In 2016, Jain was called to design MPavillion in Melbourne, Australia. True to his inclination towards tradition mixed with a modern spirit, the design of the pavilion was a 16.8-metre square manifestation that used 7km of bamboo, 50 tonnes of stone and 26 km of rope.

Bamboo poles were brought from India for this installation. Slanted panels that form the roof of the MPavillion are made of sticks of the Karvi plant. These sticks were woven together by Indian craftsmen over a period of four months.

Over the years, he has been a recipient of numerous international prizes- including the Global Award for Sustainable Architecture (2009), the seventh Spirit of Nature Wood Architecture ward, Finland (2012) and the third BSI Swiss Architecture Award (2012).

Jain tries to inculcate the relationship between man and nature in his architectural designs. In an interview with ArchDaily, he says, "Architecture is a physical and material manifestation and precise representation of what it means to be human."

When asked if dealing with the reality of gravity was the biggest challenge for him, as is for other architects, he said, "I would like to remain within what is my capacity, in my physical constructs, I have limits and it is within those limits that I need to find ways to extend myself. For me, it is not equilibrium itself that's important but the idea of working towards equilibrium and the idea of centre"
